Name of Program: A Program aimed at Persons with Disabilities

Statement of Intent: “Shooniyaa Wa-Biitong recognizes that all Treaty #3 members, including persons with disabilities, have equal opportunities to contribute towards a strong Treaty #3 nation”

Program Description:

To ensure that person with disabilities have equal opportunity to access existing Shooniyaa Wa-Biitong’s programs through the removal of barriers.

Program Objectives:

  • To increase participation of people with disabilities in the labor market.
  • To broaden awareness and increase employment opportunities for people with disabilities.
  • To ensure that people with disabilities receive the necessary supports to enable them to become self-sufficient in the work force.

Participant Eligibility:

  • Treaty #3 Members.
  • Individuals with a self-identified disability that is restricting or poses a barrier to employment and who is willing, ready and capable of employment.

Programs & Services Available:

Persons with disabilities will have access to all existing programs and services available. Depending on the nature of the disability, modifications to existing programs and services will be determined on a case-by-case basis. Modifications would include hours of work, completion targets, trainer/employer accommodation and outcomes. Those involving costs could include on-the-job mentors/coaches, transportation, employment support and the provision of specialized equipment.

Eligible Financial Assistance and Program Maximums

  • All financial assistance identified within existing programs is deemed eligible. They include:
    1. Up to $16.55 per training hour for wage subsidies or $15.00 per hour for training allowances.
    2. Course/Tuition, books, materials/supplies.
    3. Transportation/commuting allowance.
    4. Employment Supports.

Additional cost items will be considered on a case-by-case wage basis.

It is intended that the use of program funds for purchase of specialized equipment or services is not to duplicate other funding sources that may otherwise be available.

Employer Requirements:

  • Willing and able to accommodate persons with disabilities.
  • Willingness to accept sensitivity training for workplace.
  • Able to provide training and guided supervision as required.
  • Must meet eligibility guidelines under existing programs as follows:
  • Must be in business for a minimum of 6 months.
  • Have Revenue Canada Taxation account.
  • Have Third party liability or WSIB coverage.
  • Have proper personnel policies and bookkeeping practices in place.
  • Be in good standing with Shooniyaa Wa-Biitong.
